Sharing Ideas: Grassroots Project Started by Neighbors
We hosted our third Sharing Ideas Panel on Saturday, July 24th 2010. There were four panelists: NEAR Gardens/Cully Collective Market, Sabin Traffic Calming Effort, Overlook Neighborhood Ice Cream Social, and the Urban Farm Collective. Each group shared the spark that ignited their idea and the tools and strategies they used to turn their ideas into action.
RESOURCES
Community Building Tool Packets
Explore Tool Packets on various subjects such as Asset Mapping, Survey and Canvassing Tools, or Event Logistics. Discover icebreakers and facilitation styles in Hosting Community Conversations. Develop your community-building idea and work through the strategic planning questions in the Idea Development Plan. The Tool Packets are like a tool chest. You may take from them whatever works best for achieving your own neighborhood or community goals. They are to be used for non-profit or volunteer-driven efforts. If there is a packet you would like to use or modify, simply remove our name from the document and make it your own.
STORIES
Community History Storytelling
We believe that storytelling has the power to deepen understanding and enhance a sense of community. Based on this belief, Community Outreach will sponsor a series of History Storytelling events in every quadrant of the Portland metro area. Read a review of the first in this series—Community History Storytelling: Southeast Portland. On June 17th, 2010 seven people from various neighborhoods and organizations volunteered to share their reflections. An open forum for more storytelling followed the scheduled speakers, with the evening ending on a neighborly note of lively social exchange.
