Flock Together Social Gathering

On March 13th, 2010 Community Outreach sponsored a Social Gathering at Humboldt Gardens Opportunity Center.  Twenty people gathered to meet new people and discover common interests.

The afternoon began by each person completing one of the following sentence starters:

  • I am interested in…
  • I want to talk to someone about…
  • I am looking for…
  • I have to offer….

Each person met four other people in 2-minute mixers.  Then we played a game entitled Birds of a Feather Flock Together.  Each person had a stack of “feathers” to write down their name and an interest they have.  The feathers were then placed on “trees” or stations that were set up around the room.

The trees were categorized by interest including art, indoor activities, outdoor activities, history and social issues, family and pets, landscaping and gardening, local and international travel, languages and culture, sports and fitness, and other.  Everyone who attended the social event received a map of the “flocks” so that folks can stay in touch and reconnect around their common interests.

A Flock Together Resource List was provided.  It shows some organizations and websites to find free or low-cost social gatherings, forums, groups, or events that are happening around Portland.
