North Portland April 2011
On April 16th, we hosted Community History Storytelling: North Portland at the Historic Kenton Firehouse. Four featured storytellers shared various aspects of North Portland history from living and working within it. During the Open Forum, people from the audience shared their memories as well. The afternoon ended with mingling, resources, and checking out a table full of artifacts, photographs, and newspapers about North Portland.
Colleen Hosmer and Patricia Holdner shared remembrances when their family owned the St. Johns Review from 1926-1972. Pastor Elbert Mondaine spoke about Celebration Tabernacle’s presence in North Portland and its focus on community development and small business creation. Ray Guimary grew up in the Peninsula district from 1930-1955, and provided insight about what the neighborhood was like before WWII. Alyse Spencer reflected on her mother’s experience in the Vanport flood and in early education in North Portland. The Open Forum provided an opportunity for anyone who attended to share stories about the history of North Portland communities.
