Bright Neighbor Workshop
On March 19th, 40 people gathered at the New Columbia Community Education Center in North Portland to learn about Bright Neighbor. Randy White, the creator of Bright Neighbor, provided training to use the online social networking site dedicated to creating a community of swappers and sharers.
Bright Neighbor is free to Portland residents and allows users to create a public profile, post events, offer rides, and lend one another tools and household items. Bright Neighbor’s goal is to create a user-friendly way for people to connect and to learn how to barter services and goods. In the Swap and Share, you can create lending lists of items and skills you are willing to share with other users/neighbors.
“The strangest trade I heard was of a woman getting Japanese lessons in exchange for hemming someone’s pants,” said Randy. One person who attended the training has already used Bright Neighbor to offer up her front yard as a community gardening space.
Bright Neighbor is full of helpful tools and resources including links to garden planning websites and text translators. Bright Neighbor University is a section of the site full of local instructional videos made by Portland residents. Learn to grow mushrooms or create a water catchment system at your home. Post videos of skills and information you can teach others.
